In this session, we'll explore how incorporating the arts (visual, performance, and STEAM) across all subjects not only enhances student engagement but also boosts academic achievement, creativity, and social-emotional learning. Participants will gain actionable strategies for creating a school-wide culture that fosters artistic expression while meeting instructional goals.
Cayla Barnes is an Arts Integration Specialist at Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary in Columbia, Missouri, where she helps teachers and students unlock creativity across all subjects. With over 14 years in education, Cayla has a passion for making learning meaningful through the arts and empowering teachers to weave creativity into their daily practice. She specializes in designing school-wide systems that support arts integration, foster student engagement, and build a culture where the arts are a driving force for learning. Cayla combines research-based strategies with hands-on approaches, helping schools transform how they teach and how students experience learning.
Julia Coggins, Ed.S. is currently the Assistant Principal at John Warner Middle School in Columbia, Missouri. With over two decades of experience in education, including eight years as principal at Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary, Julia is a passionate advocate for arts integration in schools. Her leadership has centered on using visual, musical, and theatrical arts to enrich student learning, foster engagement, and build inclusive school communities. Julia brings a wealth of practical insight to her work and is excited to share innovative strategies for meaningful arts integration during the Missouri Alliance Webinar Series 2025–2026.
